Prayer to Hekate

Through three realms you walk

on two feet with six arms

your three heads and six eyes

all-seeing in light or dark

your two torches raised and lowered

showing the way for us

who dare to follow you,

Hekate Trivia,

away from the crossroads

and over the hill

into the unknown.

Attended by hound and serpent

and armed with dagger and hook

you roam the waste places,

Hekate Soteira,

yet visit grain-giving Demeter

and dread Persephone

and wide-eyed Hera

with equal welcome from all.

Your feet know

the tracks of the stars

and the paths of the sea

and the secret caverns

where the way leads

downward to the light

within the earth.

You who fought the Giants

with the power of a Titaness,

Hekate Perseis, born of Asteria,

teach your worshippers

wisdom and knowledge,

give power to heal and to harm,

to curse and to bless,

to wander far yet

come home safely.

Witch, bitch, torch

in the night, revealer

of mysteries, Hekate,

great goddess,

deal kindly with me,

your supplicant.

  1. Oh, very well done indeed!

I’d suggest using this as your default “Hekate” invocation in formal Antinoan rituals in place of the hymn that I included in Devotio….it’s that good!

(In fact, that might be a project for you in what remains of National Poetry Month: how would you write your own versions of invocations to Ianus and Wepwawet for the beginning of Antinoan rituals? It would be good to get individuals doing their own thing for that, yet still on a similar outline, as much as it would be for everyone to be doing the exact same prayers with the same words, etc.)

  2. Thank you! I will ponder writing those other two hymns; I have a prayer card of Janus, and there are some lovely pics on the net of Wepwawet’s animal form as well as of his surviving images, and some contemporary devotional art as well.
